Your Questions About Pitching Machine Parts

Maria asks…

I need a new arm for a iron mike style pitching machine. Any idea were I can find parts. the arm was hit with a line drive and it bent

Charles asks…
Why does my washing machine creak during wash cycle?
During the wash cycle my washing machine creaks about every 2 seconds (creak - creak - creak...). It's a low-pitched creak and sounds like two parts are rubbing together. I have lifted the lid and tried to maneuver the drum with my hand - no change in the sound. The sound comes when the drum oscillates from side to side.
Could it be the bearings? Might I be able to replace them myself? I consider myself to be fairly competent (I've done plenty of work on cars - clutches, intake systems, etc) and would feel comfortable tackling this myself if need be. Many thanks in advance.

Steve answers:
It could be a belt is loose and slipping, and that's what's making the creaking noise. It's common for washers that have some years on them.
To access the assembly, unplug the washer and pop off the front panel. Vacuum out all the dust. That itself may do the trick. People don't realize that all the years of dust and dirt can affect the way a machine operates.

Lizzie asks…
Speed control of an AC motor, what are my options?
I have a pitching machine that is not made anymore and the company does not support repair or have replacement parts. The pitching machine is basically made up of a chord to plug into an outlet running to a 5 amp circuit breaker, then to some sort of rotary speed controller, then to the motor that spins the wheel. The speed controller is busted, as in, the rotary dial part is completely gone and I an look down at what appears to be a small gear. My initial intention was to just find the part from the manufacturer and be on my way, but I have come to find out that the company went out of business about 12 years ago and I can't find any information what so ever on the part.
So this is my problem. I know the speed controller was rated at 125VAC and 3A. I don't know what I should be looking for to replace it. I have done research on potentiometers, rheostats, VFD's, light dimmers, fan speed controllers....I think I have covered it all. Using Ohms law, I came up with all of the parameters for the dimmer switch. 125VAC, 3A, 375W, 42Ohms.
What are my options here? Obviously I don't want to spend much money as I can buy a newer version of the pitching machine for $100. That rules out a VFD and possibly a speed controller. I have read light dimmer switches are bad for AC motors and it seems that potentiometers (based on Radio Shacks web site) have either way too much resistance, over 1,000 Ohms, or are not rated for 125VAC, or even 110VAC.
Basically, I would like to go to the hardware store and pick something up to use, but I am not sure if they carry anything that will work without me burning up the motor, and even at that, most of the light dimmer switches I see are for 120V, 600W, which is around 24 Ohms.
Can someone give me a breakdown of my options here?
I don't know the motor HP right now because I haven't pulled the motor out yet, but I can't imagine it being more than a small fractional horse power motor.
Without knowing much about what I am doing, I don't know if putting in something that is rated for a much higher wattage, or higher or lower resistance will have an effect on the ultimate results, I just want this thing to have a good range of "speed".
Thanks for any help.

Steve answers:
The added information in the first answer and all your detail makes be feel strongly that what you need is either a fan speed controller, which come in 3A and 5A models or a solid state motor speed control. You can buy the former at most hardware and lighting stores and probably all the home centers. Notice that the amp rating is lower than the same sized lamp dimmers - the trade off being the extra protection against the transients from the motors. It isn't that dimmers are bad for motors, it is that motors are bad for dimmers - they often won't shut off, but just keep firing because of the back emf.
A motor speed control should be tougher, but I'm not sure how available they are. Radio Shack used to have plug in versions but I haven't seen one in a while.

Nancy asks…
In girls 8u softball, the batter hits the ball and the ball hits the plate, is it foul or a fair ball?
this is a pitching machine game and all girls are 8-10 years old. I know some of the rules are different from place to place, but I thought the plate was part of the field and when batter hit the ball and it hit the plate first, I thought it was a fair ball. Ump said otherwise !!

Steve answers:
The plate is part of the field of play. However, if the ball then enters foul territory, it is foul. If it stayed in fair territory, it is fair.
The same goes for the bases. If a ball hits third base, it is fair no matter where it goes after that.

Can you give advice for a new Little League Coach?
Our community is short on volun-teers and I have offered to coach for the minor boys team (8-10 years, pitching machine). I feel a little anxious because first of all I am a mother and second of all, some of our parents can be pretty vicious. I have been part of our baseball program for many years and I am very familiar with the procedures of the games, but I want to offer the boys the best for both practice and game strategy.
I am looking for drill suggestions and game situation suggestions. Please, if you know anything that has worked for your team or will help cement skills, I would be grateful. Also, any good sites for additional info would be wonderful.

I coached L.L. In AZ for 6yrs, from t-ball through 11-12 y/o. Most important thing is to have FUN!. Teach the basics, the rest will follow. Encourage the kids in everyway. Explain to the parents what your teaching the kids & ask them to be patient with you. Most parents i've dealt with understand. Also, try & get the parents involved during practices & even the games.
Here's a great site, all types of drills & even coaching tips: http://www.qcbaseball.com/drills/drills1.aspx
HAVE FUN WITH YOUR TEAM!!!!!

Paul asks…
Arm surgery...what is it like?
Hi. I broke my distal ulna (the lower part of the little arm bone., there are two, radius, and the ulna, FYI) 3 months ago. Its still not healed. They gave me choices if i wanted another cast. or surgery.
What is surgery like?!?!?!?
YOU DONT HAVE TO READ THIS IF YOU DONT WANT TO.
BUT JUST FOR MORE DETAIL.
read my story first please
I was playing softball, and i was batting. The pitching machine was going 58 miles per hour. One of my friends yelled " they are coming inside, so watch out". i didn't think any of it until the ball hit me in my arm (close to my wrist)
i couldn't move it at first. Surprisingly i didn't cry, because it didn't hurt like a break should. i ran to the bathroom to put cold water on it.
That was on Monday.
I continued practicing (softball) thru Friday.I just put pre-wrap on it... of course i complained.
but i always get hit. its not a big deal. it normally is just a bruise.
It bruised pretty badly, but i could move it and it was barely swelled, so no one thought it was a break (even the "sports school doctor").
Everyone was telling me that if you can still move it, its not broken. so....
But on Friday, it hurt so bad i couldn't catch a ball. so i stopped practicing.
i convinced my mom to take me to the doctor the following Tuesday
turned out it was broken. they put a splint on it. then the next day (Wednesday) they gave me a cast.
i had it on for 4 weeks.
of course it smelled. [ baby powder helps]
& its hard bathing//showering. even with a bag....it still leaks it. my mom had to bathe me....for FOUR WEEKS.
but with the cast on for that long only one time it hurt bad. i could have broken someone's nose or fingers with my cast. (i almost did.) i could play football with it. It had so much protection. the saw to take it off was pretty cool. i was scared at first though.
Once its off, it feels ultra weird. your arm is all flaky. (ew) but i used some of this really good soap for damaged skin right when i got home. and your arm hair is all black and your skin is really really pale...
Well I'm a girl. and i didn't like that so i was in the shower (DOING IT ALL BY MYSELFFFFF) i was shaving my legs and whatnot and i was like "hey. i kinda wanna shave my arm." so i did. right after i did that i wish i never did. a couple months later, it kinda looks like...leg hair. but not as dark. but still. ew. right?
BLEACH NOT SHAVE.
got it? good.
my pediatrician thought it would be a good idea to take it off before xraying it. wrong. he xrayed my arm afterwards and it was still not healed.
so he was like "just wear this brace and we'll have another x-ray in a couple a weeks."
I've been wearing that brace and having many x-rays since i had gotten my cast off and it still hurts. so my mom finally decides to take me to a SPECIALIST--an orthopedic. Today was my appointment. Dr. Farrell knew what to do right when i got in there. Before looking at my x-ray he actually was feeling my bone and arm for anything wrong. my ulna was lose. (one of the "wrist" bones. that stick out... if you know what i'm talking about?) he asked me what hurt and he knew what was wrong RIGHT when he did that. Dr. Farrell told me that i had damaged tissue caused my the injury that couldn't be found in the x-ray. (which most doctors go by) and also my bone was at an angle, and didn't heal right.
He gave me two choices.
1-- He wanted to try a cast for 4-6 weeks. but it might not work.
it would be a long cast. and HELLO. summer? its gonna get freakin hot. when i had my cast it was in march//april. it was kinda chilly.... but not like burning how it is now.
2- surgery. then possibly a cast, if he doesnt like what he sees during the surgery. but by then it will be 4 weeks till school starts and hopefully it will be off by then...not the best way to start a new year... i was like . please just fix it. ASAP. im tired of having a broken arm. im tired of it hurting. and im tired of waiting. to see if " it will work" forget a cast. GIVE ME A SURGERY.
i went with number two.
my Mri is scheduled tomorrow.
then im going on vacation so right afterwards on the 22nd, i will have my surgery. and sleep over night at the hospital. I have never been in a surgery before but they told me i would be knocked out. so really i dont even care. i dont want to know the details. i just want it to be fixed. so dont be all picky. its been 3 long months. ive wasted my summer. just get the surgery ASAP......
hope this helps.
dont make the mistake i//my parents did.
GO TO A SPECIALIST FIRST.
not your doctor..
orthopedics know what they are talking about.
((sorry i posted that on an another site.))
but really. what happens during a arm surgery?
Haha i know i have tons of details.
i posted it from another site.
and was like why not.
ummm im not sure.
I'm 15 years old, he said he was going to fix it and put some plates in it?
im not really sure.
i will know more after my MRI. which is soon.

Steve answers:
You sure have an awful lot of detail in here! Thanks for the tip on shaving the arms, I too found that out the hard way before.
Well, it probably would have been better to ask your doctor. If you had more details on the kind of surgery you were getting. Your age is quite relevant too I'm afraid.
If you're unter 16 you could have affected the growth plate in your arm which may be why it didn't heal properly.
Basically I don't know what kind of surgery you're getting so I can't really tell you much!
Maybe if you can tell me - are you getting a pin or plate or screw put in? Are they manipulating the bones - as in putting them back into proper alignment? Are they going into the joint at all?

machine knitting help?
I have an old brother machine (585) which still works fine. Also have an attched ribber (586) However have lost the manual for the ribber and need a bit of help using it. how do i set it for circular/tubular? there are three sliders on it, one on the botton edge that goes from P to R and to on the carriage, both go from N to P-R. predumably i set ot on half pitch and then make the knit carrige knit on one direction (push in part button?) and the ribber carriage in the other but what combination of the sliders will do that.
thanks in advance.
