Donald asks…

How do i restore my hair back to normal?

Okay, i want to know what should i do to my hair to get it back to the length it was in before. I had medium length hair and it was very healthy. After that i had my hair in kinky twist it was okay but when i took it out everything was confusing. The left side of my haif was shorter, it couldnt even touch my shoulder and the left side was okay in a way but it still look short. What am i going to do? It's just a disaster....because im trying to grow my hair out. If anyone out there can help me out please do. Thanx : )

Steve answers:

Your hair broke off.
If you twist your hair too much (especially when it's wet) you can very easily break it.
You need to get it cut.
You can grow your hair all you want, but it's going to be uneven and messy until you eventually even it out.

Betty asks…

Where does african hair weave come from?

I know that most European weaves come from youths who sell their hair, or those who donate it. And most Indian hair is collected from people who give it up in tonsure sacrifice. But how do companies acquire Afro-textured hair? I purchase human afro-bulk weave once a week for my kinky-twist clients, and have had a couple of them ask me where the hair comes from, to which i can reply nothing but "the hair store" lol. Any authoritative answers?
1.)I know for a fact about the Indian hair, I spoke to one of the contractors in my home state and was informed that the Remy company gets most of their hair from temples who collect it from tonsure pilgrims and sell it to hair businesses. Its a multi-million dollar business.

I know that marley hair is synthetic, I am referring to HUMAN AFRO-TEXTURED HAIR. It usually runs about 28$ a pack in the U.S. and does not come longer than 16 inches, which makes sense because it is difficult for African peoples with kinky hair to grown their hair much longer than that. I want to know if anyone knows how the companies collect the hair: is it from donors, from people with long kinky hair that sell it, or otherwise, and from which countries does it come from. No need for insults. The company I get my hair from says "made in usa" but I have not bothered to look at other brands. No need for insults, just factual help, please and thank you

Steve answers:

You read that somewhere about European hair and Indian hair and think it's true? Somebody gave you a nice lil packaged story that sounds good about where their hair comes from. LOL..... Well guess what it's human hair or its synthetic whether it's from africa, europe or india. Period. Look on the packages it's likely all coming from China or Japan.

Your Questions About How To Do Kinky Twists

Donna asks…

Should I leave scary guy ?

I feel like Im losing my mind. I like a guy who has a lot of red flags.
I should be running away screaming. We havent had sex yet but I know he wants to badly.
But he talks about very kinky twisted fantasies. Too much about pain/forced @nal and 'fake' rape. Ive told him how Im not that kinda girly. Im no prude but why talk that way when we havent had sex yet ?
I want to break it off because my gut says he's a freak.
But the best I could do was tell him I cant see him and am scared of him right now.
He got angry/hurt acting with me last night when he heard this and his temper scares me. Acted like a I ruined his Christmas.
Why can't I break it off with him ? In my mind I still might see him again some day.
Part of me feels like we could make each other happy, but the other part of me sees him killing me in a fit of rage.
We're both 30 yrs old and one of us should know better.

Should I keep up my resolve to have no further contact ?

Steve answers:

Please don't walk away. Run away!!!! Stay away!!!

Daniel asks…

will my hair grow?

i'm a full african american and had long hair down to my shoulders from pre school to 5th grade. my hair had always had a hard time growing but my mom had made it grow using hair products like lard cooking stuff and blue magic grease.after my mom passed away in 2005 i had 2 do my hair myself and take care of it.it broke off really badly due to glued in tracks, clorine in the pool, and bad perms.i am now in the 9th grade n my hair is getting to my shoulders but it is very uneven.i now have kinky twist that i tried to do myself but they didnt come out right, but i want to keep them in so my hair will grow. i also just bought dr.miracles hot grow last night and plan on using that product on my hair while i have kinky twist.i am also using hair growing pills from a cvs pharmacy. it is now march and i want my hair to be atleast to my shoulders by june 1st. will my hair grow using these products and how long will it take? will it be long by the summer?

Steve answers:

Okay heres the deal im in 8th grade and am also black i dont know how u do your hair but u should use a ceramic flat iron
paul mitcheal ones are very very nice and if u do use flat irons u cant have it all the way up to the highest degrees on it other wise after time it wont work as well and when its one or two degrees lower it comes out softer also make sure your using a good shampoo and conditioner and leave your conditioner in for at least 5 minutes [[15 minutes to deep condition it]] and dont wash your hair all the time it will dry out your hair. If u keep doing what your doing plus what ive told you and your hair should grow faster
hope ive helped!!

African american: how to grow hair out natural?

Im 16 and i ve been thinking about going natural meaning NOOO perms whats so ever. In the 6th grade i went natural but i switched backed to perms in the 8th grade. Now im going to the 11th grade and i want to go natural again. I haven't permed since May 3,2011. Since then i wore it in kinky twist, I wore them for 2 months then took it out. I only have perm on my ends. I got my hair in kinky twist last Thursday. My ends desperately need to be trimmed but the hair dresser said don't worry about it because my ends are protected. My mom just said i need to go back to a relaxer or its going to break off. Is this true?? How do i take care of transitioning hair? Should i trim my split ends?

Steve answers:

Okay, when going natural you have 2 options.
1) Cut all the hair off
2) Grow the hair out and *transition* to natural. Your hair will NOT break off if you take care of it and watch your moisture/protein balance (read about that here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/278612/the_fine_art_of_protein_and_moisture.html?cat=69 ) while doing this

If your ends are healthy you don't have to worry about trimming but, learn how to identify split ends (here's a picture of them: http://www.natural-beauty-01.com/images/splitEndsChart.gif ) because honestly, after learning about hair care and being on the hair care forums most stylists (particularly African American stylists) have no idea what they are talking about and it's up to YOU to know what to do with your hair and when. I also do not recommend going to a salon while you are transitioning to natural. I am currently 10 months post relaxer and I went to a salon when I was 4 months post for prom and most hairdressers do not know how to properly manage natural or transitioning hair. Long story short - I lost a lot more hair that I would have if I would have done it myself.

Your ends are protected in kinky twists BUT, that doesn't mean they don't need to be trimmed. Your ends are still being manipulated when you comb your hair to put them in and take them out and when your hair rubs against the kanekelon hair it's causing friction and it does wear down the hair so, you may need a trim. Like I said before check for yourself.

As far as going back to a relaxer and breakage that's a myth. Honestly, the best thing you can do for yourself when going natural is to research and find out information for yourself. Check out http://naturallycurly.com http://curlynikki.com http://nappturality.com and http://going-natural.com to get you started. There is SO much information out there so, please use it. I've still only scratched the surface and I've been researching for about 10 months. Then, there's books out there to help too and all sorts of resources so, don't take people's word for granted. They're usually wrong. (I typically don't listen to anybody in real life unless their hair is arm pit length or longer or they recently had a cut because usually, the person will be an example of the information they give you)

Mandy asks…

Steven asks…

How much should it cost me (in American dollars) to have my hair dread locked?

Ok, so I am a white woman. My hair must first be braided to give it the volume and kinky texture needed to form dread locks. I already have someone that will braid it. So don't figure that into the price. A lady at a salon told me it would be $250.00 to back comb, twist, and wax my hair. Does this sound right? And then she said it would be $50 an hour for the restwisting process? This seems like its way too much to me.

Steve answers:

A little more then 10 years ago my sister had it done and it cost right around 150-250. It took about two-three hours to have it all finished.
